Active Release Techniques

Active Release Techniques® (ART) is a soft tissue technique that treats problems with scar tissue built up in muscles, fascia, ligaments, and nerves. Not only is ART effective for rehabilitation and sports injuries, it is also successful in treating overuse and repetitive strain injuries.

When an injury occurs, our bodies produce scar tissue and adhesions. An accumulation of scar tissues can stop the natural movement of muscles and other soft tissues that result in pain, discomfort and weakness.

Scar tissue can also irritate tendons and nerves. This may cause sensations such as pins and needles or numbness. ART works to break up this scar tissue so muscles and nerves can return to a natural pain-free movement and function.

Shoulder pain, headaches, plantar fasciitis, tennis elbow, and shin splints are just a few examples of the many conditions that can be helped with Active Release Techniques. What is an ART treatment

An ART session is a combination of examination and treatment. The first step is to assess the injured or painful area and locate the scar tissues that are restricting movement and/or causing pain. The ART provider uses his or her hands to evaluate the texture, tightness, and movement of muscles, fascia, ligaments and nerves. The treatment involves applying tension to the scar tissue while lengthening muscles, tendons and ligaments. ART returns tissues to their correct tension and function thus eliminating symptoms. With over 500 specific treatment protocols unique to ART, it allows providers to identify and correct the specific problems that are affecting each individual patient.

Who Can Benefit from ART?

ART is successful for a broad range of injuries and conditions. It is highly effective for overuse and repetitive strain injuries (RSI). It is successful for treating sports injuries in athletes, people injured at work or in automobile accidents. ART is also effective for people who just work hard and hurt. Symptoms can vary from aches and pains, decreased range of motion, burning, numbness and tingling.
